Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer found herself at the center of a social media storm after a video surfaced showing her feeding a chip to feminist author Liz Plank, who was kneeling in front of her. The 8-second clip quickly went viral, sparking confusion, criticism, and plenty of raised eyebrows. In the video, Whitmer, sporting a Harris/Walz campaign cap, is seen leaning down to feed a Doritos chip to Plank, who captioned the video, “if he won’t, big gretch will.” It didn’t take long for social media to light up with comments expressing everything from bewilderment to outrage.
How else can this be interpreted other than mockery of Catholics and the sacrament of Holy Communion, not to mention the distasteful pornographic innuendo? Gretchen Whitmer is only the latest example of the gross anti-Catholic bigotry festering inside the Democratic Party. pic.twitter.com/KG1BmHYkJM

One Instagram user wrote, “This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen,” while another simply said, “This is disgraceful.” The video also hit X (formerly Twitter), where the New York Post’s James David Dickson tweeted, “Why [is] Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer feeding chips to a woman who’s on her knees? And where is the rest of the video?” Others questioned whether it was an odd political stunt or something else entirely.
After the initial reaction, Plank attempted some damage control, updating her caption to draw a link between the chip-feeding moment and the CHIPS Act, a Biden-backed bill aimed at boosting semiconductor production. She wrote, “Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing.” But by that point, the narrative had already taken off, with many viewers too puzzled by the bizarre image to focus on the updated message.
Adding fuel to the fire, some conservatives suggested the video seemed like a mockery of religious practices, with Whitmer assuming a priest-like role. Political commentator Michael Cernovich simply called it “strange,” while others speculated about the intent behind the stunt.
As if things couldn’t get weirder, Plank and Whitmer later appeared in a nine-minute segment on Plank’s show, Chip Chat, where they dove into a curious exchange on parenting and post-birth ab–tions. Plank asked Whitmer, “You have two daughters. When they leave their Stanley Cups lying around, do you ever think about getting a post-birth ab–tion?” Whitmer and Plank then have a laugh about it.
Whitmer’s attempt to appear casual and relatable seems to have missed the mark with many, who were left questioning both the tone and purpose of her recent media appearances. While she has certainly captured attention, it’s hard to say whether this latest move will bolster her support or leave more voters scratching their heads.
