Rep. Ilhan Omar is at it again, and this time she’s managed to outdo herself. In a bizarre rant on the left-wing YouTube channel Democracy Now!, the Minnesota Democrat claimed that Somalia — her birthplace and one of the most war-torn, failed states in modern history — wasn’t as bad as America under President Trump. Yes, you read that right. According to Omar, the United States is worse than the Somalia she fled as a child.
Her reasoning? The Trump administration’s immigration enforcement and deployment of National Guard troops to crime-ridden cities like Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Omar painted a picture of “armed men in plainclothes snatching people off the streets” and accused the president of creating a “constitutional crisis” by using military assets to restore order. She even went so far as to say, “I grew up in a dictatorship. And I don’t even remember ever witnessing anything like that.”

Really? Because when Omar and her family fled Somalia in 1995, the country had already collapsed into total anarchy. The government had been toppled, militias controlled the streets, warlords ran protection rackets at checkpoints, and civilians were routinely slaughtered or starved. That same year, the United Nations packed up and left after its peacekeeping mission turned into a bloody embarrassment. Somalia wasn’t a democracy under stress — it was a stateless wasteland where power came from the barrel of an AK-47.
In fact, Omar’s own family escaped after their private compound was overrun by 20 armed men. They didn’t leave because a president held a military parade or deployed troops to keep order. They left because Somalia was one of the most dangerous, lawless places on earth, and survival meant fleeing if you had the means.
Fast forward to today, and Somalia hasn’t exactly improved. The U.S. State Department warns Americans not to set foot there under any circumstances. It remains a stronghold for Islamist terror groups like al-Shabaab, a country plagued by famine, piracy, and clan warfare. And yet Omar insists America under Trump is somehow worse?
This isn’t just tone-deaf, it’s an insult to every American who values freedom, law, and order. Only in the United States could a refugee from Somalia rise to the halls of Congress — and then turn around and trash the very country that gave her that opportunity. Omar’s remarks aren’t just hyperbolic; they reveal exactly why so many Americans are fed up with the radical Left’s hatred of their own nation.
