James Dennehy, the head of the New York FBI office, has been forced to resign, claiming he was ordered to submit his retirement papers last Friday—without being given a reason. The abrupt decision has raised serious questions, especially as the New York FBI office is facing accusations of withholding thousands of Epstein-related documents from Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Dennehy, a Marine Corps veteran who joined the FBI after 9/11, sent a farewell letter to staff on Monday, confirming his resignation. “Late Friday, I was informed that I needed to put my retirement papers in today, which I just did. I was not given a reason for this decision,” he wrote. He called his colleagues “an office of professionals who will always do the right thing for the right reasons.”

But the timing of Dennehy’s departure is raising eyebrows.
Dennehy’s New York FBI office has come under intense scrutiny following allegations that it hid thousands of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein from AG Pam Bondi. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating whether FBI officials in New York deliberately withheld evidence that could expose high-profile figures connected to Epstein’s illicit activities.
Bondi recently demanded full access to all Epstein files, and her team uncovered evidence suggesting that thousands of pages of records were being intentionally kept from her office. Dennehy’s forced resignation—coming just days after these revelations—has only fueled speculation about a cover-up.
Adding another layer of controversy, Dennehy had previously refused to identify FBI agents involved in January 6 prosecutions when requested by the Trump administration. Last month, he sent an email to his staff vowing to “dig in” after several FBI officials who worked on J6 cases were removed from their positions.
“Today, we find ourselves in the middle of a battle of our own as good people are being walked out of the FBI,” Dennehy wrote in that email. “And others are being targeted because they did their jobs in accordance with the law and FBI policy.”

Dennehy’s resignation comes just weeks after eight veteran FBI leaders were forced out of their roles following the appointment of FBI Director Kash Patel. The move was seen as part of Trump’s broader effort to clean house at the Bureau.
With the Epstein documents scandal and the FBI’s J6 investigations under heavy scrutiny, Dennehy’s sudden removal only deepens suspicions about what’s really happening inside the agency. Will the truth finally come out?
