Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro finally let the mask slip, and it was something to watch. For a guy who normally speaks like every sentence has been sanded down by three PR teams, he suddenly turned into someone who had clearly had enough. The Atlantic published a profile where Shapiro absolutely unloaded on Kamala Harris over her new memoir, “107 Days,” and he did it with the kind of blunt irritation Democrats usually reserve for Republicans who dare question their narratives.
According to the profile, Shapiro didn’t just push back a little. He went straight at Harris, accusing her of spreading what he called “blatant lies” to “sell books and cover her a–.” When a politician starts talking like that on the record, you know the temperature behind the scenes is a whole lot hotter.
Harris’s book claims Shapiro walked into the 2024 vice presidential vetting process acting like he already had the naval observatory keys in his pocket. She said he asked about artwork, tried to take over the meeting, and eventually needed to be reminded that he would not be “co-president.” That is quite a picture, although not a particularly believable one if you have ever watched Harris try to explain anything without word salad taking over.
Shapiro fired back immediately. “That’s complete and utter bullsh*t,” he said, making it clear he was not in the mood for gentle clarifications. Then he doubled down with, “Her accounts are just blatant lies.” This from a man known for being so measured and disciplined that even his critics admit he rarely shows real irritation. Apparently Harris found the pressure point.
Part of Shapiro’s frustration seems rooted in how he saw the 2024 disaster unfold. He reportedly believed Harris mishandled the entire campaign while pretending not to notice President Biden’s obvious decline. On top of that, he walked into the vetting process already irritated, convinced progressive activists were working overtime to sabotage him. The Atlantic even noted that he was furious about anti Semitic innuendo circulating in left wing circles. By the time he sat down with Harris, the meeting basically flipped, with Shapiro questioning her leadership instead of the other way around.
Democrats are whispering that none of this is new. The tension has been simmering for years. What is new is that it spilled out in public at a time when the party is scrambling to recover from losing to President Trump again and trying to pretend they are unified heading into 2028. Shapiro is widely expected to jump into that race, and his reputation as the competent, steady Democrat just took a hit thanks to Harris’s book tour.
Meanwhile Harris is trying to rehabilitate her own legacy after one of the worst campaign face plants in modern history. Her memoir is being read by many Democrats as an attempt to rewrite just enough of the past to keep herself relevant.
If this feud is any indication, Democrats are nowhere near done fighting about who gets blamed for 2024. Harris might have opened something her party was desperately hoping to keep buried, and Shapiro’s reaction shows he has no interest in letting her version of events stand.
