One Republican governor dropped one of his classic little hints this week, the kind he knows will set off political insiders like a fire alarm. When a post suggested the Florida House Speaker said there were no redistricting plans on the table, Ron DeSantis simply replied, stay tuned. That’s usually his way of saying the gears are already turning whether the Legislature wants to admit it or not.
The back and forth started when Speaker Daniel Perez reportedly told reporters there was no plan yet for redistricting. He said the conversation had not happened and that lawmakers were not there yet. That sounded like someone trying to keep expectations low. But DeSantis has been very clear for months that he expects redistricting to happen this spring. And knowing how he handled the last map, it would be wise for anyone in Tallahassee to take him at his word.

The governor has long argued that Florida got shortchanged in the census game while blue states counted everyone they could find including illegal aliens. He even said Florida could have gained up to five more seats if the process were fair. Whether that number is high or not, the governor’s point has been consistent, Florida is growing fast and the maps should reflect that. Republican Party of Florida chair Evan Power has echoed the idea that three to five new GOP leaning seats could be created, and there is no question the governor would love to make that happen.
Right now Florida sits at a 20 to 8 Republican advantage, thanks to the map DeSantis forced through after rejecting the Legislature’s original version. He even credited that map with helping secure the GOP House majority. So when he hints a redo is coming, it isn’t exactly a mystery what direction he wants to go. President Trump has also been pushing states to redraw their maps to protect the slim Republican majority in the House. Historically the president’s party loses seats in the midterms, so Trump wants GOP states to shore things up while they still can.
🚨 JUST IN: Gov. Ron DeSantis has CONFIRMED Florida's 2026 redistricting is coming. We could be looking at a stunning +5 red seats.

Florida Republicans are confident their voter registration strength can overpower whatever unease voters may have and any sluggish midterm turnout. With four Republican led states already redrawing maps to add potential GOP seats, Florida jumping in would not surprise anyone. DeSantis loves a fight, Trump wants more safe districts, and the Legislature can pretend to be shocked, but everyone sees where this is heading. Stay tuned might be the understatement of the year.
