REPORT: Kamala Harris Eyes New Run for Office

Kamala Harris is facing significant pressure from her closest advisors to consider a run for governor of California after her term concludes in January. According to a new report from CNN’s Isaac Dovere, multiple aides and political allies believe the 2026 gubernatorial race presents Harris with an ideal opportunity to revitalize her political career and secure a prominent leadership role in her home state.

Harris’ advisors have noted a rebound in her favorability ratings after Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race back in July. Despite once holding the dubious distinction of being the most unpopular vice president in modern history, her approval numbers climbed above 50% during her brief stint as the Democratic nominee. Her fundraising prowess also stands out, with the Biden-Harris campaign raking in over $1 billion, though criticism of the campaign’s financial management lingers, with many blaming Obama-era operatives like David Plouffe and Jen O’Malley Dillon for missteps.

Having been elected statewide in California three times — twice as attorney general and once as U.S. Senator — Harris is seen as a formidable candidate who could easily clear the Democratic field in 2026. “She would probably clear the field or mostly clear the field,” one insider told CNN. “It seems like a layup.”

Still, Harris’ camp is torn. While some believe a gubernatorial run would solidify her legacy and provide a platform to address issues important to California, others argue it could derail any future presidential ambitions. As one advisor put it, running for governor “would be more of a capstone than a stepping stone.” For those hoping she makes another bid for the White House in 2028, entering a governor’s race two years prior might be seen as a step down.

On the other hand, some strategists believe skipping the gubernatorial race keeps Harris’ presidential prospects alive. “Running for governor would be a step down, and it would interfere with her ability to run for president again,” one source explained. “A shot at running for president again is worth giving up running for governor.”

Harris’ recent public statements hint at a determination to remain in the political arena. “You haven’t seen the last of me,” she reportedly told donors and supporters. Her advisors believe she should announce her decision by the summer of 2025, giving her time to mount a robust campaign if she chooses to pursue the governor’s mansion.

Regardless of her decision, it’s clear Harris intends to stay in the spotlight. Whether she opts for the governorship or sets her sights on another presidential bid, her next move will be crucial in shaping the trajectory of her political career.
