David DePape, the man convicted of attacking former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer, has finally received his sentence after approximately 2 years. DePape has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing comes after a San Francisco jury found DePape guilty in June on multiple charges, including aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and false imprisonment of an elder.

Before his sentencing, DePape delivered a bizarre and lengthy statement in court, filled with conspiracy theories and grievances. He began by claiming that 9/11 was an inside job and condemned what he called America’s “evil murder magic rituals.” For more than 45 minutes, he railed against various perceived wrongs, even asserting he was a psychic and that his ex-wife was a “body double.” Judge Harry Dorfman repeatedly urged him to stick to topics relevant to the trial, but DePape persisted, disregarding the judge’s instructions.
DePape’s attack on Paul Pelosi shocked the nation in 2022. In the middle of the night, he reportedly broke into the Pelosi home, where he confronted the then-82-year-old Paul Pelosi with a hammer. According to prosecutors, DePape intended to confront Nancy Pelosi, who was not at home, and instead attacked her husband, causing severe injuries. The assault was one of the highest-profile threats of violence against a public official’s family in recent years, underscoring security concerns for lawmakers.
During sentencing, DePape’s defense attorney, Adam Lipson, pleaded for leniency, arguing that his client suffered from mental health issues. “This is a man who has always been a peaceful, law-abiding person up until his activation,” Lipson stated, urging the court to consider a lighter sentence. However, Judge Dorfman ruled firmly, stating, “It’s my intention that Mr. DePape will never get out of prison; he can never be paroled.” The sentence reflects the court’s stance on the severity of DePape’s crimes and the perceived threat he poses to public safety.
This state sentencing comes just after DePape was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for “assaulting a federal official’s family member and attempting to kidnap a federal official.” His life sentence in California will be served concurrently with his federal term, ensuring that DePape will remain behind bars permanently.
