Newly Released Bodycam Footage Released of Fatal Police Shooting of Pardoned J6 Defendant

Newly released dashcam footage from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has provided insight into the fatal police shooting of 42-year-old Matthew Huttle, a recently pardoned January 6 defendant. The incident occurred on January 26, 2025, in Jasper County, Indiana, just days after President Trump issued a blanket pardon to over 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Huttle was pulled over for speeding when the situation quickly escalated.

The dashcam footage shows that Huttle, visibly distressed, immediately identified himself as a J6 defendant and seemed fearful of being taken back to jail. The officer informed him that due to his habitual offender status, he would need to be taken into custody, at which point Huttle panicked, attempted to re-enter his vehicle, and declared that he was going to take his own life.

As he ran and re-entered the vehicle, the officer struggled with him a moment and then opened fire. The Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office later determined that the deputy’s use of force was legally justified.

An autopsy revealed that Huttle was shot five times:

  • Once in the back, piercing his heart
  • Once in the back of the neck, entering his brain
  • Once in the left shoulder
  • Once in the left thumb, a wound sometimes seen as defensive
  • One shot missed

This case has raised questions regarding police use of force in crisis situations and the mental health impact on individuals involved in high-profile legal cases. While the investigation has concluded, discussions surrounding policing policies and crisis intervention techniques remain ongoing.
