Well, here we go. The Democrats are officially throwing their hat in the ring to take out one of the Republicans in the U.S. Senate. Maine Governor Janet Mills, who’s been quietly plotting her next political act from Augusta, is now expected to formally announce her campaign for U.S. Senate early next week. And if you blinked, you might have missed her soft launch — a since-deleted X post where she basically yelled, “Let’s turn Maine blue and kick Susan Collins to the curb.”
At 77, Mills isn’t exactly bringing fresh energy to the Senate. What she is bringing, apparently, is an eagerness to bow to the Chuck Schumer-Kamala Harris wing of the party and a burning obsession with anything related to President Trump. Her now-deleted campaign video (and the ActBlue page that went with it) took shots at Senator Collins for being a Republican who didn’t completely disown Trump. Mills claimed Collins had “sold out Maine” and that she was ready to “flip the seat blue.” Translation: Schumer handed her the script, and she read it.
And let’s be honest — this Senate race is going to be one of the ugliest in the country come 2026. Susan Collins, a rare Republican survivor in a state that’s trending blue, has been a thorn in the side of the left for years. She’s a moderate, sure, but she’s not a pushover. She’s got seniority, influence, and the trust of Mainers who don’t want their state run by the D.C. Democrat machine.
But Mills is Schumer’s hand-picked candidate, so here we are. The same woman who fought tooth and nail against President Trump’s common-sense executive order banning biological males from competing in women’s sports now wants to take her fight to the U.S. Senate. When Trump told her in a White House meeting that defying the order would come at a price, she smugly responded, “See you in court.” That pretty much sums up her whole political vibe.
And the plot thickens. She’s not even guaranteed the nomination. Graham Platner, a Bernie-backed oyster farmer and military vet, has already raked in over $3 million since August. Bernie Sanders himself is publicly begging Mills to sit this one out, saying it would be a “waste of millions” on a divisive primary.
So, we’ve got a progressive insurgent, a Schumer puppet, a craft beer mogul, and a former Hill staffer all vying to challenge a battle-tested Republican. Sounds like a perfect recipe… for a Democrat civil war.
