Well, New York City finally did it, they elected a full-blown socialist as mayor. Not just “progressive,” not just “left-leaning,” but Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist who now runs the largest city in America. And in response, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) is dropping the political equivalent of a neutron bomb: a bill that would cut off all federal funding to NYC for as long as Mamdani’s in office.
Carter didn’t hold back. “Since New Yorkers voted for COMMUNISM, the federal government should NOT bail them out. Don’t come crying to @realDonaldTrump when this ‘experiment’ FAILS,” he said on X, formerly Twitter. In other words, you broke it, you bought it.
The bill is short and to the point, just two pages, and it’s a declaration of war against the socialist tide trying to creep its way from coastal cities into national politics. It says, in plain language, that “any unobligated Federal funds available” for New York City “are hereby rescinded” and “no Federal funds may be obligated or expended for any purpose” in NYC while Mamdani is mayor.
Now, let’s be real. This bill isn’t likely to pass, not with the Senate still under Democratic control and the media clutching their pearls at every Republican attempt to push back on the socialist takeover. But it’s not about passing, it’s about sending a message. And that message is: the rest of America is not going to bankroll your socialist utopia experiment.
Mamdani beat out both former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, the same Curtis who’s been sounding the alarm on NYC’s descent into chaos for years. No surprise in a city that hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since Bloomberg squeaked by in 2005. But now, with a guy like Mamdani in charge, the city is on a fast track to looking more like Caracas than Manhattan.
Carter’s right. If New Yorkers want communism, let them have it, just don’t ask the rest of us to subsidize it. As he put it, “Any New Yorker with common sense is welcome to move to the great, FREE state of Georgia.”
This isn’t just about NYC. It’s a national moment. The left has made Mamdani the face of their party. The GOP should take that gift and run with it straight into 2026.
