Here’s a headline that should never exist in the United States of America: “Disabled veteran ordered to remove American flag by homeowners association.” Yet here we are, in Volusia County, Florida, where a local HOA is actually suing a disabled veteran over a flagpole — yes, a flagpole — that flies the very flag he sacrificed to defend.
According to a report from FOX affiliate WOFL-TV, the veteran—who has not been publicly named—is facing an $8,000 lawsuit filed by the Countryside Villas PUD3 Homeowners Association. His crime? Installing a flagpole in his own front yard without HOA approval. The HOA is even threatening to slap a lien on his property, claiming he didn’t get the “proper permissions” before erecting the pole.
Unbelievable. What kind of twisted priorities does this HOA have? Who sees a disabled veteran flying the Stars and Stripes and thinks, “We need to sue that guy”? It’s disgraceful.
Community support has surged in the veteran’s favor. Local resident Frank Johnson, himself a veteran, told reporters, “Leave the veteran alone. He hasn’t done anything wrong.” Johnson added that the veteran called him crying, feeling bullied and harassed by people who clearly care more about petty bylaws than honoring real heroes. And what was the other outrageous complaint from the HOA? Weeds in his lawn. That’s right — they’re now the landscaping police too.
What makes this worse is the message it sends: that serving your country and defending the American flag still won’t protect you from bureaucratic busybodies with zero appreciation for patriotism or sacrifice.
This is Florida — not San Francisco. You’d expect better. And with Governor Ron DeSantis, a Navy veteran and a proven fighter against this kind of woke insanity, leading the state, it might be time for someone to give his office a call. DeSantis has never shied away from putting bureaucrats in their place, and this veteran could use an ally in Tallahassee.
This shouldn’t even be a debate. The American flag belongs on American soil — especially in front of the home of someone who fought for it. The HOA members behind this embarrassment should be ashamed — and yes, made famous for all the wrong reasons.
Stand up. Speak out. And never back down when it comes to the American flag.
