Senate Democrats thought they had a gotcha moment. Turns out, all they got was egg on their faces.
On Tuesday, an attempted political hit job against FBI Director Kash Patel imploded in real-time when Republicans, reporters, and frankly anyone who can read federal regulations pointed out the obvious: Patel didn’t break the law by using a government plane for personal travel—he was required to.
This whole circus kicked off when The New York Times published a hit piece full of anonymous grumbling and half-baked innuendo, suggesting that Patel was living large on the taxpayer dime. The damning examples? A trip to a UFC fight with President Trump and another to an NFL game where he sat next to Wayne Gretzky. Oh no, he’s a hockey fan. Alert the ethics committee.
Cue the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Democrats, led by Dick Durbin (D-IL), who ran to social media with their pants on fire. “BREAKING: New reporting finds apparent misuse of government dollars by Kash Patel,” they breathlessly posted. The problem? Their accusation contradicted the actual reporting they were citing.

Here’s what the Times also said: FBI Directors are required to fly government planes for any travel—business or personal—due to the need for secure communications. Patel isn’t living it up on the taxpayer’s tab. He actually reimburses the government the cost of a commercial ticket whenever he uses the plane for personal reasons. So unless the crime is “being more efficient than Joe Biden’s Amtrak tab,” there’s no story here.

An FBI spokesperson drove the point home: “All ethical guidelines are rigorously followed.” End of discussion.
But the hypocrisy from Democrats doesn’t end there. While they’re whining about Patel following protocol, it’s their own guy—Senator Chris Van Hollen—who actually used taxpayer money to fly to El Salvador to advocate for the release of a known illegal alien accused of being part of MS-13. Talk about burying the lede.
Even users on X (formerly Twitter) couldn’t let that one slide. “Really reaching after a trip to El Salvador was expensed,” one person replied. Another nailed it: “Meanwhile, Democrats are misusing funds violating the Logan Act while they stand in El Salvador trying to bring back a foreign terrorist into this Country.”
Meanwhile, Patel has been too busy doing his job—like targeting transnational gangs and arresting illegal alien criminals—to bother acknowledging the phony outrage. He did, however, repost Dan Bongino’s epic takedown of the Times for its lame reporting and recycled gossip.
Bottom line? Democrats tried to start a fire and only managed to light themselves up. Again.
