Coalition of 28 Million Black Christians Turn on Al Sharpton Ouster and Kamala Harris!

Rev. Al Sharpton, MSNBC host and head of the National Action Network (NAN), is facing intense scrutiny after revelations that Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign donated $500,000 to his nonprofit shortly before a favorable interview. The controversy has sparked outrage from a coalition of African American churches, who are demanding an investigation and Sharpton’s suspension from the network.

According to Federal Election Commission filings, the Harris campaign made two $250,000 payments to NAN in September and October. Shortly after, Sharpton conducted a friendly interview with Harris on MSNBC, just weeks before the 2024 election. Sharpton never disclosed the payments to viewers or MSNBC executives, raising serious ethical concerns.

The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), representing 27.7 million churchgoers and 150,000 churches, has called this a “moral stain” on the black Church and journalism. NBCI President Rev. Anthony Evans issued a pointed statement demanding full transparency about the $500,000 transaction, its intended purpose, and whether Sharpton personally benefited. Evans emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “What exactly did Kamala Harris receive in exchange for $500,000?”

MSNBC admitted it was “unaware” of the payments, which raises questions about oversight at the network. Many critics argue that this scandal undermines the credibility of both Sharpton and MSNBC. It also highlights broader concerns about Sharpton’s dual roles as a political activist and a media figure, with some accusing him of leveraging his nonprofit for political favors.

Rev. Evans and other NBCI leaders are particularly troubled by the impact this controversy could have on the integrity of the black Church, as Sharpton’s actions appear to compromise its moral authority. “This situation casts a shadow over our commitment to justice and integrity,” Evans said, while urging MSNBC to suspend Sharpton pending an independent investigation.

The incident has reignited long-standing debates about Sharpton’s qualifications as a journalist. Critics argue that his high-profile role at MSNBC diminishes opportunities for experienced African American journalists who prioritize fairness and objectivity.

As questions mount, the Society of Professional Journalists’ ethics code provides a stark contrast to Sharpton’s actions. Principles like transparency, accuracy, and accountability were clearly ignored in this case, further fueling the call for Sharpton to step aside until the matter is resolved.

For now, the onus is on MSNBC to address these concerns and uphold its journalistic integrity. Meanwhile, the NBCI’s demand for answers underscores the broader implications of Sharpton’s actions for both faith-based leadership and ethical media practices.
