With Democrats still reeling from their crushing defeat in the 2024 presidential election and the return of President Trump, even the most stubborn holdouts on the left are starting to face the music. Enter Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), a so-called “moderate” Democrat who’s now publicly throwing his own party under the bus in the wake of their historic collapse.
Golden, who clung to his House seat in Maine’s Second Congressional District by fewer than 3,000 votes, has a front-row seat to the growing disconnect between the Democrat elite and middle America. His district—a working-class, rural region with an R+6 Cook PVI—voted for Trump by nearly 10 percentage points in November. That means Golden survived thanks to ranked-choice voting, the left’s favorite anti-democracy gimmick, which lets losers win as long as they’re the right kind of loser.
But even with that political life support, Golden isn’t hiding his frustration with his own party.
Speaking on Meet The Press, Golden torched Democrat leadership for refusing to learn a single lesson from their electoral beatdown.
“I warned that… a lot of people would move on, shift into full resistance, and stop focusing on what we’re getting wrong… we better figure it out,” Golden told Kristen Welker. “The American people voted, not just for President Trump, but for a Republican-led Congress in both the Senate and the House.”
That’s right—even a Democrat admits the voters wanted GOP leadership across the board. And instead of soul-searching, Golden said his colleagues are already retreating to their comfort zone: whining, resisting, and ignoring the will of the people.
What’s even more telling? Golden was the only House Democrat to vote for the Republican-led budget resolution—one of the first major wins for President Trump since returning to office. That budget, now signed into law, solidified GOP control over the nation’s fiscal priorities.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has Golden’s district on red alert for 2026, and for good reason. Along with targets like Jared Moskowitz in FL-23 and Tom Suozzi in NY-03, Golden’s seat is now hanging by a thread.
If even Democrats like Golden are calling out the implosion of their own party, it’s safe to say 2026 might just be another red wave—and this time, it’s coming for every last blue stronghold.
