Joe Biden used the solemn occasion of Jimmy Carter’s passing to take an unnecessary swipe at President-elect Trump, delivering remarks that felt more like campaign rhetoric than a tribute. While speaking in St. Croix, Biden was asked what Trump could learn from Carter, to which he repeatedly responded, “Decency. Decency. Decency,” before launching into a diatribe that contrasted the two leaders.
“Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking by someone who needs something to just keep walking? Can you imagine Jimmy Carter referring to someone by the way they look or the way they talk? I can’t,” Biden remarked, insinuating Trump lacks the compassion and values Carter exemplified. He then shifted to a vague commentary about America’s moral leadership, ending abruptly as White House staff attempted to wrap up the press availability.
The remarks came on the heels of thoughtful tributes from Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, both of whom struck a respectful and unifying tone. Vance noted Carter’s lifelong dedication to service, while Trump praised Carter as a man who “truly loved and respected our Country.” Trump’s statement acknowledged their political differences but emphasized Carter’s tireless efforts to better America, calling him a “truly good man” who would be “greatly missed.”
Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to serving this country. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones. May he Rest in Peace. https://t.co/2tiQyb8N7K

Trump’s measured response was a sharp contrast to Biden’s comments, which felt pointed and divisive. Even in death, Carter’s legacy served as a political tool for Biden, who couldn’t resist using the moment to jab at his successor.
Biden’s remarks seem especially ill-timed given Trump’s gracious words, which highlighted Carter’s contributions both as president and in his post-presidency humanitarian work. Instead of fostering unity, Biden’s comments reignited partisan tensions at a moment that called for reflection and respect.
This latest episode underscores Biden’s growing tendency to frame his disagreements with Trump in personal and moral terms, often at the expense of decorum. While Trump has yet to respond to Biden’s remarks, the contrast between the two leaders’ statements speaks volumes. Trump chose to honor Carter’s life and legacy without political overtones, whereas Biden seemed unable to resist taking a partisan shot.
At a time when Americans could use more unity and less division, Biden’s comments missed the mark. Carter’s life of service deserved better than being reduced to a rhetorical prop in a political feud.
What a two-faced a-hole Biden is… in reality Trump has shown more compassion for people than the lying, money-grubbing Biden, ever has during his entire career and probably before that.
